Don’t Take A Vacation From Your Workout
Planning for a vacation is exciting. Choosing the destination, arranging for all the travel and hotel accommodations and packing those bags also can be a little overwhelming.
Our vacation is a time to take a break from the real world, and getting away from our chaotic lives is a great way to relieve stress. But while we are writing the itinerary for the potential weeklong trip, daily workouts are hardly ever listed.
I have fallen into the vacation trap where I tell myself that “calories don’t count” and try to convince myself that I will just work out extra hard when I return home. I pay no attention to portion control and eat all hours of the day while on vacation. And workouts are never on my agenda during my trip. Does this sound familiar?
Here are a few fitness tips that can be added to the itinerary without ruining the vacation:
Pack workout clothes:
When you open your suitcase, it will be a daily reminder that you need to work out. Make sure to pack comfortable running shoes and a refillable water bottle.
Eat a hearty breakfast:
This should be done daily, but it is especially important during your vacation. It is common to skip breakfast because we are eager to get to the theme park or an attraction before it opens. Wake up a bit earlier and sit down at the breakfast table. It will give you the energy you need to last throughout the day.
Plan for a daily 15-minute workout:
Some hotels have 24-hour fitness centers with some weights and cardio equipment. Most hotels also have pools. It’s hard to expect that you will likely get in a full workout while on vacation, but stop by these areas and try to get in a daily 15-minute workout.
Watch portion control:
When we are on vacation, we tend to eat everything in sight. You have to be realistic with your diet during this time. More than likely, it will not be spot-on healthy, but don’t beat yourself up over it. Try those new foods, but don’t overeat. Eat until you are satisfied instead of eating until you are stuffed.
No fitness center? Walk, bike or run on your vacation:
Instead of taking a taxi or bus during your vacation, walk. Rent a bike to ride around the city. Or run along the beach to take in the views of the ocean. You’ll be surprised what you see when you slow down and take in the sights of your destination. If you’re planning to stay in Colorado, there are plenty of hiking trails around the state.
For a little added competition, wear a pedometer to see the amount of steps you take daily. Challenge yourself to add more steps every day.
