Things To Do

This spectacular waterfall is located in the small town of Nathrop in central Colorado, off Chaffee County Road 162. In 2013, a rock slide took the lives of five family members below the falls, and the area was closed. Trail work is underway for a new trail to the falls that will lead to an observation deck where the waterfall can be viewed, rather than ending at the base of the falls like the previous trail. In the meantime, avoid the area for safety’s sake, and if you want to volunteer to help build the new trail, contact the US Forest Service.

Pro Tips

  • Mount Princeton Hot Springs is also located on County Road 162 and makes for an excellent day of soaking, swimming, sunning, and spa treatments.
  • If you drive the county road 8.7 miles to the Agnes Vaille Trailhead and it’s still closed, continue on the road for another half mile and park at a signed pullout on the right for views of Cascade Falls, a roadside cascade on Chalk Creek.
  • Continue on the county road to St. Elmo, one of the best preserved ghost towns in the state. Tours are available and there’s a general store where you can pick up souvenirs and say “hello” to the chipmunks that call the area home.
