Chatfield Lake is a 1,479-acre reservoir at the confluence of the South Platte River and Plum Creek below the Front Range about 25 miles southwest of Denver. The two-mile-long lake, with a 47-foot average depth, was formed by a dam built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1967 and 1975 for flood control after four massive floods on the river devastated the Denver area. Chatfield Lake is leased to the state of Colorado for Chatfield State Park, one of the state’s busiest parklands, and Denver Water which manages the water for its municipal supply. The lake is a popular recreation area, with over 1.6-million people visiting the 3,894-acre park annually for recreation, including fishing, hiking, camping, and boating.

Pro Tips

  • Chatfield Lake is a good warm water fishery and offers the best trout fishing near Denver. Fishermen find walleye, channel catfish, yellow perch, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, carp, bass, and rainbow trout. You can purchase a fishing license at the state park office. The lake also has a handicap fishing pier and an accessible trail to a fishing platform.
  • Chatfield is a big lake so it’s perfect for summer water sports. It’s a popular venue for motorboating, sailing, jet skiing, waterskiing, sailboarding, and paddleboarding. Part of the lake is wakeless, making it ideal for kayaking and canoeing. A swim beach, open Memorial Day to Labor Day is on the west side of the lake by the campground.
  • Lots of wildlife, including birds and mammals, live on and around Chatfield Lake. Wetlands and ponds on the South Platte River and Plum Creek is perfect bird habitat, including a great blue heron rookery. Over 345 bird species have been spotted here, as well as mule deer, coyotes, red foxes, rabbits, black bears, and mountain lions. An Audubon Nature Center on the South Platte arm has programs to learn more about wildlife and habitats.
  • Chatfield State Park offers lots of fun activities for folks of all ages, including hiking and biking on 26 miles of trails; camping at four campgrounds; flying model airplanes from a paved runway; launching a hot air balloon from a pad; or letting dogs romp in a 70-acre dog park.
  • Recommended season(s): Year-round.
