Things To Do

Prospector Ridge Campground at 5,121-acre Mueller State Park is a 12-site, walk-in camping area (#55-66) for tenters. The wooded sites are easily reached from a parking lot on Wapiti Road. The sites are closer to the road than those at Turkey Meadows Campground, so there’s more traffic noise, but it’s a shorter walk to flush toilets. All sites have a table and fire grate, and a water spigot and vault toilet by the parking lot. The sites fill fast in summer so make reservations between three days and six months in advance. The Camper Services Building in the middle of the campgrounds has restrooms, coin-operated showers, laundry and playground for kids. Pets are welcome at the campground, but must be leashed at all times and are not allowed on trails.

Pro Tips

  • Mueller State Park is west of Colorado Springs. From Interstate 25 in the Springs, take Exit 141 onto West Cimarron Street/U.S. 24. Drive west on U.S. 24 for 25 miles to Divide. Turn left on Colorado Highway 67 and drive 3.5 miles to the park entrance on the right. Follow Wapiti Road to the visitor center and campground. Contact the park for more information.
  • Camping is limited to a single campsite with a maximum of six people. Tents need to be set up on established tent pads. Only 3.2% alcoholic beverages allowed and no marijuana use.
  • This is bear country, so strict rules must be followed to reduce bear problems. Food, scented products, and cooking utensils must be stored in vehicles all the time. Don’t bring food or toiletries in tents; don’t sleep in clothes worn while cooking; and dispose of all trash in dumpsters or bear-proof containers. Ask a ranger if you need a storage area for food and they can provide a safe box.
  • The best way to see Mueller State Park and its wildlife is to take a hike. The campground is convenient to several trailheads. Recommended hikes are Grouse Mountain Overlook Trail (#16) and Outlook Ridge (#7) with its spur trails to Raven Ridge Overlook and Red Tail Overlook. Also check out the visitor center for interesting exhibits and access to more trails.
  • Recommended season(s): May to September.
