Colorado’s Pond in the Clouds

Colorado’s Pond in the Clouds

There is perhaps no more scenic pond in the country than Sky Pond, sitting tucked away at 10,900 feet above sea level in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sky Pond has attracted hikers, photographers, and adventures for many years thanks to its location amidst the high-altitude mountains of Colorado.

People often visit year round, even daring to cross the ice that forms on top of Sky Pond during colder months of the year.

This alpine lake is located in a basin surrounded by sheer cliffs, including the famous granite spires of the Sharkstooth.

There are also two 13,000 foot mountains in the vicinity, Taylor Peak and Powell Peak.

The trail to access Sky Pond starts at the Glacier Gorge trailhead and is nine miles round trip, gaining 1,780 feet of elevation. Consider this a strenuous route.
