For those with a decent high-clearance vehicle, this twofer hike offers the mountaineer the chance to bag two lofty summits in the grand Elk Mountains. Most people park at 11,200 feet, in order to attain the 3,000 feet of climbing that many consider necessary to have conquered a 14er, but it is possible to drive to as high as 12,800. The famous Maroon Bells dominate the view from the two summits, offering a rare window into one of Colorado’s most spectacular wilderness settings. These are the ancestral Rockies, with jagged peaks and loose, nasty rock. Tread with care as you summit Castle first and then Conundrum a short distance away. Return the way you came or carefully descend into the high basin between the peaks.
