Colorado Cyclist Dies Nearly Two Weeks After Being Hit by Vehicle

Tymen Schreuder, 40, died Tuesday, nearly two weeks after he was hit by a vehicle while cycling across a south Colorado Springs intersection, police said.

He was cycling on Cheyenne Meadows Road at Colorado 115 about 3:30 p.m. Jan. 17 when the crash happened. Ernest Eldridge, 89, was making an unprotected left turn from westbound Cheyenne Meadows Road onto southbound Colorado 115 and hit the cyclist, police said.

Schreuder, who was crossing the intersection legally on a green light, was taken to a hospital.

Eldridge might face charges “after the completion and review of this investigation,” police said. Neither alcohol and drugs nor speed are being considered factors in the accident, but “the daylight conditions (sun glare) did make visibility challenging,” police said.

Schreuder’s sister, Taneda Schreuder Sadri, remembers him as a fun-loving, kind and patient uncle to his five nieces and nephews.

“He was an inspiration – he was always so positive,” Schreuder Sadri said. “We joked that he was a little prone to exaggeration when he talked about any of his friends or his family. … He made everyone feel better than they are.”

Schreuder graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School before attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, his sister said. He then received a master’s degree in statistics from Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

“He was brilliant – a brilliant math guy,” Schreuder Sadri said.

He worked in Boulder before returning to Colorado Springs about a year ago, she said. He was transitioning into the data mining field.

Schreuder Sadri said her brother’s death is a reminder to be careful on Colorado Springs’ roads.

“Just take every minute driving seriously, because (the driver) took this gorgeous, goofy, generous soul and ended his life, just by carelessness,” Schreuder Sadri said, her voice shaking.

Schreuder’s death was the city’s fifth traffic fatality this year, police said. At this time last year, there had been one death.
