Weekend Deadly in Colorado’s Ski Country
A skier and snowboarder died in separate incidents on Colorado slopes Sunday.
Gabriel Wright, 47, was snowboarding with friends in the Bear Creek backcountry in Telluride when he may have clipped a rock in shallow snow, throwing him forward and causing him to hit a small log, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s office said in a release.
Wright, of Telluride, was considered a “professional level backcountry boarder,” authorities said.
Authorities said his friends did not witness the incident, which occurred at about 2 p.m. Sunday. They told San Miguel Sheriff’s Search and Rescue that it took 30 minutes to reach him. They provided CPR, but were not able to revive him. A helicopter was flown in to retrieve Wright.
A male skier also died Sunday after hitting a tree at Keystone Resort, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Deputies responded to the incident shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday. Keystone Ski Patrol transported the skier to Saint Anthony Keystone Medical Clinic, where he later died.
No additional information about the skier would be released until family members were notified, authorities said.
