Fire near Durango continues to rapidly grow; reaches 5,100+ acres
The ‘416 fire’ continued to grow on Thursday with just 10% containment. The fire has now burnt 5,103 acres, resulting in the evacuation of an additional 500 homes. More than 800 homes had already been been evacuated. Currently, evacuees have no access to their homes with the exception of emergency medication.
With the growth of the fire, the total number of evacuations is well over 1,000, with more than 1,000 additional homes on pre-evacuation notice.

To give you an idea of how big 5,100 acres is, it’s approximately 8 square miles. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Headed into the weekend, the weather is unlikely to help efforts to stop the spread of the fire. According to weather.com, there will be a steady breeze throughout the weekend in Durango with no predicted precipitation and low humidity.
