Iconic Hahns Peak Lookout Tower near Steamboat vandalized

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Hahns Peak Lookout Tower near Steamboat Springs fell victim to vandals at some point last week. The damages included broken windows and a broken door.

A structure steeped in history, the Hahns Peak Lookout Tower is one of the oldest fire lookout towers in the Centennial State, originally constructed in 1912. During this time, people viewed the construction of this building to be symbolic of the Forest Service’s commitment to protect the beautiful land in the area.

The Hahns Peak Lookout had a long stint during which it fell into decay due to weather and lightning. However, it was repaired with the help of the Historic Routt County, the Forest Service, and a group called HistoriCorps.

Hahns Peak is a popular spot to hike, with many aiming to reach the lookout tower. It’s on a 3.6 mile out-and-back trail with a net elevation gain of 1,600+ feet. Hahns Peak reaches an altitude of 10,774 feet.
