5 Free Hot Springs Around Colorado

If you’re looking to relax on a budget, then you’re in luck. Colorado has a few free hot spring options, but you may have to drive (and hike) a little bit to find them. Here are a few to add to your list for your next visit.

1. South Canyon Hot Springs, Glenwood Springs

This undeveloped hot springs pool near Glenwood Springs offers mountain views for the right price (free). A short hike to South Canyon Hot Springs leads you to relaxation in a scenic area.

2. Penny Hot Springs, Carbondale

Penny Hot Springs is located the Crystal River between Carbondale and Aspen. Natural hot mineral water feeds the riverside pool, and a parking area has made access easy to this free hot springs pool, but this popular attraction may be crowded at times, particularly on the weekends.

3. Radium Hot Springs, Kremmling

If natural, primitive hot springs are your thing, you’re going to love Radium Hot Springs. Though the hot springs pool can be hiked to, it is more rewarding when accessed via raft or kayak while navigating the Colorado River, as it sits right on the side of the river.

4. Conundrum Hot Springs, Maroon Bells Wilderness near Aspen

As with any area that is free to access, these free hot springs are often crowded despite the 8.5-mile hike, but the adventure is well worth it. Conundrum Hot Springs is subject to overuse so Leave No Trace ethics should be closely followed.

5. Rainbow Hot Springs, Pagosa Springs

Nestled alongside the San Juan River near Pagosa Springs, these primitive hot springs require a 4.5-mile one-way hike to get to. The two pools that make up Rainbow Hot Springs are cordoned off with rocks. The upper pool is the smaller of the two and features temperatures reaching 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The lower pool can fit 6-10 people and usually stays around 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
