Dead horses found in Colorado, 53 malnourished horses rescued

The Colorado Humane Society & S.P.C.A. along with Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center teamed up to help the Park County Sheriff’s Office remove 48 (updated: 53) neglected and malnourished horses from three different properties in the Harstal area. Several deceased horses were also found on the property during their search. The area has had a very snowy, very cold winter so far this year.

The decision to remove the horses from the property was made as “the horses were in imminent danger and immediate action was necessary.”

According to one account about the horses, they were so thin that one could “basically” wrap a hand around the spine.

While these horses have been rescued, the rescuing party has now made a plea calling for financial assistance to help care for the sudden influx of animals. According to Garret Leonard, the Director of the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center, they’re expecting costs of caring for these horses to exceed $40,000. For instance, the arrival of the horses has doubled their spend on hay.

If you’re interested in donating, you’re able to do so here.

Here’s what your money will get you:

– $25 can provide hay and supplements for 1 horse for 1 week – $120 can provide hay for 1 horse for 38 days – $240 can provide hay for 2 horses for 38 days – $500 can provide 1.4 tons of hay to feed 4 horses for 40 days

According to their official press release, here’s a little more about The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center:

The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center is a private rehabilitation and adoption facility for abused and neglected horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that have been removed from their owners by law enforcement authorities. Harmony also serves as a central hub where horses from human societies and rescue groups in the Midwest and the southwestern United States can receive training and rehoming. In March 2018, Harmony began opening its doors to privately owned Colorado horses in need of rehoming. Since Harmony opened in 2012, more than 1,500 horses have been helped.
