The hidden reservoir with a backdrop of mountains near the Great Sand Dunes
Tucked away just outside the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve lies a beautiful hidden reservoir set against a backdrop of often snow-capped mountain peaks. Adventure off-the-beaten path and discover this natural wonder that most Dune visitors never see.
Smith Reservoir is located approximately 29 miles from the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Resting at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet, the reservoir’s natural beauty offers the perfect setting for recreational activities including fishing, boating, primitive camping, and hunting.
Keep an eye out for other wildlife including hawks, rabbits, coyotes, deer, owl, and pronghorn during your visit.

If you’re headed to Smith Reservoir from the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, here’s the route you’ll want to take: From the Sand Dunes, take US-160 East to Airport Road, (County Road 12) just before reaching Blanca. Continue on for about 3-4 miles south until you reach the reservoir.
There are two restrooms and a boat ramp in the area. Fishing and boating are the most popular activities for this 278-acre reservoir.
*Please note, public access may be prohibited from February 15 through July 15 on the north and east shore areas.
