Colorado has a new traction law and here’s what it means

There’s a new traction law in place on I-70 and here’s what you need to know.

An active Traction Law requires motorists to have either snow tires, tires with the mud/snow (M+S) designation, or a four-wheel/all-wheel-drive vehicle. All tires must now have a minimum of three-sixteenths inch tread. The former requirement was for traction to be an eighth of an inch.

According to the Denver Post, the new traction law requirements are mandatory for all drivers traveling on Interstate 70 between Dotsero and Morrison. All other roads are subject to driving restrictions during severe winter weather.

Violators will face fines ranging anywhere from $130 to $650. Drivers will be allowed to operate with standard tires as long as they carry tractions chains or an alternative traction device like the AutoSock. For more information, click here.

According to a report from KOAA, mandatory traction laws will be in effect on a 127-mile stretch of I-70 from September 1st through May 31st.

To test your tread, CDOT recommends the “quarter test.” Insert a quarter upside down into your tire tread, with Washington’s head going in first. If the top of the head is covered by tread, you’ve passed. If the top of his head is visible at any point around the tire (test multiple points), you’ve failed. This means you can’t drive when a Traction Law is implemented during inclement weather and snow events or on certain roads during certain months when the requirements are standard.
