Hiker dies on Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs

A 63-year-old man died of a heart attack while hiking the iconic Manitou Springs Incline trail in Colorado Thursday afternoon, September 26, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue and the Manitou Springs Fire Department were called at around 11 AM, said Patrick Kerscher, spokesman for search and rescue. The man died despite CPR efforts from both civilians and first responders.
The Manitou Incline and Barr Trail are reportedly closed while recovery efforts are underway.

Serious injuries and deaths are known to occur on the Manitou Springs Incline trail. In 2015, a 63-year-old man died while hiking Barr Trail. In 2012, a 58-year-old woman died of cardiac arrest while hiking the Manitou Incline.
It’s one of the most strenuous hikes in Colorado. The Manitou Springs Incline, also known as the Manitou Incline, is a 1-mile staircase that ascends up close to 3,000 steps and gains roughly 2,000 feet in elevation. The map below shows the location of the Manitou Springs Incline.
