A Grand Lake woman died after she was ejected from her ATV in a crash on September 23.

Brenna Lis, 26, was off-roading with her boyfriend and brother, both 29, on a trail by County Road 4 near the Bull Mountain trailhead. Lis, who was riding behind the pair of men in another ATV, suddenly disappeared. The rental company was able to pinpoint the GPS coordinates of the ATV Brenna was riding, allowing them to locate her shortly after.

According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Lis’s ATV went off the trail and 160 feet down an embankment into the woods, where she was ejected from her from ATV and thrown approximately 100 feet. The crash occurred just before 2:00 p.m.

She was pronounced dead following the crash. She was reportedly wearing a helmet that came off during the time of the crash.

It’s unclear whether the ATV was malfunctioning or if speed was a factor when the ATV went off the trail. The official manner and cause of death are pending further investigation from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Grand County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred in an area near the North Trail System, which offers access to a number of ATV trails. According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, 3 significant injury-related ATV accidents have occurred so far this year in the area.

ATVs and UTVs can be extremely dangerous. Always wear a helmet and never ride alone. Avoid engaging in excessive speeds or stunt driving. Be aware of high traffic and blind curves in the areas. Guided tours are strongly recommended for any riders who are new or inexperienced.
