Illegal elk killing could lead to big fines in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is seeking the public’s help to catch two suspects who illegally killed a bull elk last week in Game Management Unit 2, a limited, high-quality hunting unit located in northwest Moffat County, which is home to Craig and includes part of Dinosaur National Monument.

According to a press release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a witness observed two men in a pickup truck near a wounded bull elk on Wednesday evening, September 25, east of the intersection of Moffat County Roads 67 and 68 located on the northern end of the Sand Wash Basin. The following day, an elk’s gut-pile was also discovered in the same area.

The elk was estimated to be a 300-inch class, 6×6 bull. Fines for poaching a bull elk of this size may include a $10,000 ‘trophy-penalty,’ in addition to standard penalties for the illegal take and possession of wildlife, including the loss of hunting and fishing privileges in 48 states.

The description of the truck is a gray early-90s Ford half-ton extended cab, with large mud flaps and possibly a missing tailgate.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, hunters wait up to a quarter-century or longer to compile enough points to draw a bull elk license in Colorado’s GMU 2, where 300+ size bulls are plentiful on the 765,052-acre property.

Anyone providing useful information or willing to testify may qualify to receive a prized bull elk license in GMU 2 through CPW’s Turn In Poachers program. Rewards are only available if the information leads to an arrest or citation.

If anyone has information about the poaching of this elk, you are encouraged to contact the Operation Game Thief by phone at 877-265-6648 or email at [email protected].
