Truck pulling trailer careens off high-altitude mountain pass in Colorado
Known for being one of the most narrow, white knuckle-inducing drives in the state, Independence Pass is not a drive for the faint of heart.
According to Gary Cutler of Colorado State Patrol, on October 12 around 8:50 AM, a truck pulling a trailer careened off the side of the road into a steep ravine. The accident occurred at mile marker 48 on Highway 82. This is located on a narrow portion of the road on the Aspen side of the pass prior to where the switchbacks start. It’s close to the winter closure gate.
According to state patrol, the 50-year-old driver was uninjured and the truck was able to be pulled out of the ravine.
During the day this truck went off the road, weather in the Aspen area was clear and sunny, with temperatures in the 50s.
Highway 82 travels over Independence Pass, which is located between Aspen and Twin Lakes. The road reaches a maximum altitude of 12,095 feet and is closed in the winter due to treacherous conditions. The closure typically takes place on or around November 7.
Thankfully, no one was hurt in this incident, though it serves as a reminder for how dangerous Colorado’s roads can be. While you’re driving around the state, be aware of incoming weather, keep your eyes on the road, and don’t push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Mountain roads aren’t for everyone. It’s also important to be aware of how altitude sickness can impact you as a driver or passenger. Learn more about that here.
