Stray bullet deaths, booby traps, and sketchy encounters in Colorado mountain range

There’s a mountain range found between Colorado Springs and Denver that has gotten a reputation for shadiness over the years – Rampart Range in Pike National Forest. While the situation seems to be recently improving with law enforcement and recreation officials tightening restrictions on target shooting and camping, several incidents in the past have left innocent bystanders injured or killed.

The most recent podcast episode of Colorado Cold Case ( Season 3 Episode 4: The Wildness That Surrounds Us) covers the 2015 death of Glenn Martin. Martin, 60, was at a campfire in the Rainbow Falls area of Pike National Forest with his family when a stray bullet fell from the sky, killing him within minutes. This case remains unsolved.

Other incidents are covered in the episode, as well, including mountain bikers that have been threatened by recreational shooters, outdoor enthusiasts that have been inches from a barrage of misplaced bullets, and traps with deadly potential placed on trails.

This podcast episode is part of Colorado Cold Case’s investigation into the death of cyclist Tim Watkins. Watkins went missing during a mountain biking ride and was found several days later buried off trail in a shallow grave with bullet wounds. The case of Watkins also remains unsolved.
