20+ inches of snow to fall in parts of Colorado

October snow is piling up fast in Colorado, with up to 23 more inches of snow on the way.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snow falling as fast as 2 inches per hour is likely to arrive early Wednesday evening in northern areas of the state before quickly spreading southward through mid to late Wednesday evening. A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service will take effect from 8:00 PM Wednesday evening until at least 10:00 AM on Thursday morning.

Here’s what you can expect.

Accumulations will range from 1 to 23 inches across portions of south-central and southeast Colorado. The fast-moving storm could leave up 10 to 20 inches of snow in parts of southern Colorado, including Walsenburg and Trinidad, according to Fox21 News. Woodland park could see up to 16 inches and Castle Rock up to 10 inches, with as much as 23 inches of snow possible on the summit of Pikes Peak. Winds gusts of up to 50 mph are also expected over higher terrain.

Snow accumulations are expected across much of the state including the following areas: Central and Southeast Mountains, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Wet Mountain Valley, Wet Mountains, southern I-25 corridor of Huerfano and western Las Animas counties, Walsenburg, Trinidad, the Southern Front Range Foothills, Castle Rock, Northern and Southern El Paso County, Canon City Vicinity, Colorado Springs Vicinity, Pueblo County, Teller County, Monument Hill County, and Western and Central Fremont County.

Please note that all weather statements and snow accumulations are subject to change. We recommend visiting  OpenSnow for a full in-depth forecast throughout the winter season.

Severe winter weather conditions will likely make travel very difficult Wednesday evening into Thursday afternoon. Be prepared for slippery and snow-packed roads. Heavy snow and gusty winds can also reduce visibility. Delay or avoid travel, especially west of I-25 and south of I-70. Possible closures are expected for Monument Hill, the I-25 construction area south of Castle Rock, and Walsenburg south to Raton Pass and the border.
