Trail Ridge Road closes to through-travel

According to officials at Rocky Mountain National Park, Trail Ridge Road has closed for the season for through travel. Several popular destinations along the road can still be accessed, including Bear Lake Road, Moraine Park, Horseshoe Park, and the stretch of Trail Ridge Road that passes Kawuneeche Valley.
The through-drive of the road typically reopens around the last week of May pending weather. In 2019, the road reopened on June 5 due to late season snow.
Reasons for the closure include strong winds, ice, and snow that roll through the area during the winter season. Keep in mind that 11 miles of the road are above 11,500 feet. Few guardrails exist along the route and there are many steep, dangerous drop-offs.
The closure on Trail Ridge Road is in place from the “Many Parks Curve” on the eastern side of the road and the “Colorado River Trailhead” on the western side of the road.
The road is still open to cyclists and leashed pets until December 1st, likely re-opening to cyclists and pets on April 1st. Pedestrians are allowed to walk the road (with no pets) year-round.
Old Fall River Road is also closed for the season.
