10 avalanches occur in 48 hours in Colorado
As snowpack soars around Colorado thanks to a wet, cold October, avalanche risk has heightened.
The northern and central mountains now have a “moderate” risk level and the southern mountains have a “low” risk level, up from no risk rating weeks ago.
This increased risk was displayed as 10 avalanches occurred around the state between October 30 and 31. Seven of these avalanches occurred on Loveland Pass, each small in size, but a cautionary warning for when there’s more snow later in the season. Of the other three avalanches, one occurred in the Sawatch Range, another on Fremont Pass, and another at Gothic. No one was injured in any of the ten.
As winter weather starts to coat the state in snow, keep avalanche safety at top of mind. While avalanches occur in the mountains, it’s also worth mentioning that the can be deadly in an urban setting.
