On October 14, the blood-covered body of Elliot Stahl, 26, was found in Routt National Forest off of Forest Service Road 900, which leads to Stillwater Reservoir and the trailhead for the Devil’s Causeway loop in the Flat Tops Wilderness.

Initially investigated as a homicide, three individuals have now been charged with first degree murder, according to the Steamboat Pilot. The defendants also having charges related to stealing money, prescription medicine, and a backpack from the deceased.

The three charged in killing the Steamboat resident are William Clive Ellifritz, 26, Brooke L. Forquer, 21, and Skyla Marie Piccolo-Labbs, 23, each of Craig, Colorado.

The arrest affidavit details that Ellifritz was allegedly the first to stab Stahl, then making the other two suspects stab him, as well. Following the stabbing, which allegedly occurred on October 13 on the Steamboat side of Rabbit Ears Pass along US 40, the body was taken to the Flat Tops Wilderness. It was discovered by a fisher the following day.

The Flat Tops Wilderness area spans 235,214 acres, including 38,870 acres in Routt National Forest. Foot traffic tends to be sparse in the area, especially during colder months of the year. Forest Service Road 900 is one of the more trafficked roads in the area.
