A Texas woman narrowly escaped death after almost falling hundreds of feet off a ledge at the Grand Canyon. Like many destinations in Colorado, this is an example of how many natural attractions can be dangerous to distracted visitors.

According to a report from ABC 15, 20-year-old Emily Koford was visiting the Grand Canyon with her mother for the third time when the two ventured out onto a rock without any railings to take some photographs.

According to spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski, about 2 to 3 deaths occur every year from falls over the rim at the Grand Canyon. There are also a number of fatalities related to natural causes, heat exhaustion, drowning, and traffic crashes.

Scenic beauty may be incredible, but it can also be a dangerous distraction. Recently, a vehicle went 450 feet over the edge of Rim Rock Drive at Colorado National Monument. The fatal crash occurred near Cold Shivers Point, a scenic overlook that is known to distract drivers. The cause of this wreck is undetermined.

Like the Grand Canyon, Colorado is also no stranger to the outdoor selfie phenomenon. A man was gored by an elk in Estes Park after standing in the middle of a herd while trying to take photographs. One woman even carried her child close to a family of bears to snap a selfie. Wildlife and selfies are not a good match. Always keep your distance from animals you spot across the Colorado landscape. If you can’t cover the animal with your thumb at the end of an extended arm, you’re probably too close.
