Missing man found dead in Colorado canyon

A missing Palisade man was found dead on Wednesday in the Coal Canyon area of the Little Book Cliffs Wilderness Study Area in Western Colorado.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, search efforts assisted by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputies and Mesa County Search and Rescue volunteers located a vehicle that appeared to have plunged over a cliff in the Coal Canyon area. The body was recovered by helicopter due to the remoteness of the vehicle’s location.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased male as Harry Oxford, 47, of Palisade.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Oxford was last heard from on the morning of October 31. He reported missing more than a week later on November 8.

The specific time of the crash has not been reported. No suspicious activity is suspected in this case as it remains under investigation.

The Coal Canyon of Little Book Cliffs Wilderness Study Area is located near Grand Junction, just east of Mount Garfield. The area is also known for offering year-round recreation opportunities including wild horse sightings, hiking, hiking, camping, and rafting.
