5 Things to know before visiting the Ice Castles in Colorado
The Ice Castles have returned to Dillon, Colorado for the winter season, set to open on Saturday, December 28. Here are a few things you need to know before visiting.
1. Bring traction
As you might expect, things can get a bit slippery in a castle built of ice. While the ground is mostly snow, certain parts can be slick. If you can, bring traction along to ensure solid footing if needed. Definitely wear warm shoes with grippy tread.
2. Watch your head
The Ice Castles are filled with a number of oddly-shaped doorways and protuberances. As you know, ice is hard. As you navigate the castle, be aware of where your head and limbs are moving so that you don’t bump into the walls as this can cause injury.
3. Buy tickets ahead of time
The Ice Castles get quite busy each year. In order to make sure you can visit during the time you want to, buy a ticket ahead of time. Find tickets here.
4. Dress warm
The Ice Castles are entirely outside and Colorado is quite cold during the winter months. Often below freezing during the day, you’ll want to make sure you’re dressed warm for this experience. Keep in mind that nighttime temperatures will drop even more. Wear your jacket and warm boots, but also consider gloves, a hat, thick socks, and warm tights for under your pants.
5. Food on site?
There’s no food on-site at the Dillon Ice Castles, but there are plenty of restaurants within a close proximity. If you’re planning to dine before or after the experience, consider making a reservation. The restaurants closest to the Ice Castles fill up fast.
