On Tuesday night, the Manitou Springs City Council voted to close the Manitou Incline indefinitely amid the COVID-19 outbreak that’s hitting Colorado. The free Incline shuttle service will also be suspended. The shutdown went into effect on Wednesday.

The closure was put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at this popular tourist destination with a key factor being lack of on-site sanitization options. The closure will also help prevent first responders to the many accidents on the Manitou Incline from being put in a high-risk situation.

Some in Colorado’s outdoor recreation community worry that this trail closure could be the first of many to come. Many around the state are turning to the outdoors to stay active during a time of isolation.

Concern has also been raised about how the closure of the trail may further impact the mountain town’s economy. The trail is a major attraction for visitors. Other nearby attractions, including SunWater Spa, have also closed.

According to the City of Manitou Springs, the Incline averages 1,000 visitors per day. The trail climbs roughly 2,000 feet in less than a mile, consisting of thousands of steps along an old railway track. It’s known for its extreme nature.
