The iconic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb automobile race will no longer take place on June 28 amid the COVID-19 outbreak in Colorado. It has officially been rescheduled for August 30, with the 30,000+ attendee “Fan Fest” taking place on Friday, August 28.

In their press release about the move, the organization stated that “the safety of our competitors, fans, volunteers, and partners is our major concern as we move forward.”

This race will be the 98th running of the event, which sends cars up the Pikes Peak Highway at blistering speeds to the 14,115′ summit. In past years, there was a motorcycle racing component to the event, though this was canceled following another motorcycle death in 2019.

The postponement of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb event follows the disruption of a number of other Colorado events amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Concerts and festivals have been hit hard, with Red Rocks announcing that all shows will be suspended for an extended period of time. A number of other closures and cancelations have also taken place, with more added to the list each day.

The Manitou Incline was one of the first outdoor recreation attractions to face major disruption, shutting down indefinitely.

Meanwhile, while the National Parks have suspended and canceled some services, they’ve also waived entrance fees for visitors.
