Dealer busted with more than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks in Colorado

More than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized Monday in a traffic stop in Denver roughly a week before the Fourth of July.

The Denver Police Department said they discovered an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a dealer who had been operating out of a large box truck and his residence in southwest Denver.

According to the official release, the suspect, 31-year-old Louis Maestas, was stopped in the area of W. Alameda Avenue and S. Eliot Street and gave consent for police to search the box truck. He was ticketed for Possession of Illegal Fireworks and the Illegal Transportation of Hazardous Materials without license or placarding.

Police say the amount of fireworks is considered as hazardous waste when not properly stored and called in a Bomb Squad and Explosive Detection Canine Team. The fireworks were seized and disposed of. The truck was also impounded.

A report from The Denver Channel says police fielded close to 500 phone calls regarding illegal fireworks in the city of Denver.

As a reminder, fireworks are illegal in the City and County of Denver. If you hear or witness the use of fireworks being used, residents are asked to call 720-913-2059. Only call 9-1-1 in the event of an injury or fire.

Editor’s Note: Any type of firework that leaves the ground is also illegal in Colorado. Some fireworks, such as sparklers, snakes, and fountains, may be allowed depending on where you reside.
