Denver to begin 5-month project to replace, enhance safety of 14th Avenue bridge

Detour sign

The replacement of Denver’s 60-year-old 14th Avenue bridge over Cherry Creek begins this week, the city’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure announced Monday.

DOTI intends to preserve and extend the life of the bridge located on West 14th Avenue between north and southbound Speer Boulevard. In addition, DOTI will be adding wider sidewalks and a raised bicycle track to the bridge.

The traffic signals and pedestrian ramps near the bridge will be upgraded as part of the project.

Construction will begin Sunday evening, closing thru traffic from Santa Fe Drive to northbound/southbound Speer Boulevard until February.

The portion of the Cherry Creek Trail that runs underneath the bridge will also close while work is underway. Detours and delay message boards will be posted on site.

The bridge is expected to reopen in February.

The construction project is part of the Elevate Denver Bond Program, a 10-year, $937 million general obligation bond approved by voters in 2017 to fund critical improvements to Denver infrastructure.

More information on the project is available at denvergov.org.
