Aurora police officer killed in Friday crash identified

The Aurora Police Department officer killed in a car crash Friday night has been identified as 25-year-old Mikaela Lakin.

Police said Lakin was struck and killed at South Aurora Parkway and East Arapahoe Road while riding on a motorcycle. Lakin was off-duty at the time of the crash.

Police said Lakin was traveling on the motorcycle eastbound on Arapahoe Road when the driver of a Honda Pilot made a left turn while going westbound.

The driver of the Pilot failed to yield to Lakin’s right-of-way, causing the crash.

Police and Aurora Fire Rescue arrived on the scene at 6:30 p.m. The driver of the Pilot stayed at the scene was treated for minor injuries.

Lakin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lakin has been an officer in Aurora since Aug. 5, 2019. She most recently served on patrol in District One.

The other driver involved has been fully cooperative, police said. Drugs, alcohol and speed are not thought to be factors in the accident for either driver.

Police have asked for privacy on behalf of Lakin’s family.

The investigation is ongoing, being led by the department’s Traffic Unit. As of Saturday, no one was in custody or charged for any violations, police said.
