Man sentenced to 24 years for Arvada carjacking
Joseph Saiz, 25, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the armed carjacking of an Arvada man that led to a police chase and shootout, the district attorney’s office announced Tuesday.
Saiz pleaded guilty on Aug. 17 to aggravated robbery, vehicular assault and menacing. He was sentenced on Thursday.
On Dec. 14, 2019, Arvada police were called on an armed carjacking at the 5900 block of W. 68th Ave. Saiz approached the 34-year-old male victim at his home, forced him to the ground at gunpoint and stole his truck.
Police found Saiz in the stolen truck and attempted a traffic stop. Saiz then fled, crashing into multiple vehicles while eluding police. One crash caused the injury of a 75-year-old woman.
After the damaged truck came to a stop, Saiz ran away, firing shots at police officers chasing him. He evaded capture despite being pursued by multiple law enforcement agencies, K-9 units and a police helicopter.
Saiz was arrested three weeks later on Jan. 8.
On the day of the carjacking, Saiz was on bond and on probation in two other counties. This is his fourth felony conviction.
A female was also in the stolen truck with Saiz. She pled guilty on Aug. 17 to robbery and false reporting. Her sentencing is set for Sept. 28.
