Westbound motorists can drive on Interstate 70’s westbound deck in Glenwood Canyon starting Friday, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

Construction crews will wrap up a months-long project, unveiling the newly paved section of the roadway between Hanging Lake and No Name tunnels.

East- and westbound drivers should anticipate continued lane closures between Bair Ranch (mile marker 129) and No Name Tunnel (mile marker 117.6), CDOT said.

The I-70 Glenwood Canyon Surface Improvements project began shortly before the pandemic and faced delays because of the Grizzly Creek Fire, officials said.

“Despite all the challenges this project has faced, the engineering and contracting team have been able to deliver impressive progress,” Michael Goolsby, CDOT Region 3 Transportation Director, said in a statement. “This is a great example of partnership and leadership at its finest.”

Crews will continue repairs, including those on 28 pedestrian ramps through the canyon, CDOT said. Construction is estimated to be completed by October.

Rest areas, river put-ins and the bike path will remain closed because of damage from the Grizzly Creek Fire.
