Jeffrey Sloan was sentenced to 72 years in prison for a 2019 car crash in Denver that left two dead, including the son-in-law of Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers, the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.
Sloan, 37, ran a red light in a stolen car while fleeing police on June 9, 2019. He crashed into Yasir Hasan and Mark Karla in another car at Colfax Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.
Hasan, 33, died at the scene. Karla, 45, suffered severe injuries and later died at a hospital. Sloan left the scene on foot, prosecutors said.
Karla was the son-in-law of Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers.
Sloan was convicted of two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of assault, vehicular eluding with death and injury and leaving the scene of an accident involving death and serious bodily injury.
Sloan was sentenced by Denver District Court Judge John Madden.
“This is beyond question a horrific tragedy,” Madden said. “No sentence can reflect the magnitude of the lives lost and their value to their families and community.”
The families of Hasan and Karla were present at the sentencing on Friday.
“Every week brings another conversation with our 4-year-old daughter about where her daddy is,” Karla’s wife said in court. “It is impossible to overstate the loss the community feels at these two senseless deaths.”
Hasan’s brother submitted a written impact statement.
“As a family, we try to support each other. … We are trying to fill the empty spaces left behind, but we know that no one can fill his place,” he wrote.
“No one can erase the silence that haunts us or take away the pain from our bleeding hearts.”
District Attorney George Brauchler and Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Sugioka were the trial attorneys.
Brauchler pointed to Sloan’s criminal history while arguing for the long sentence, noting the longest time Sloan has been crime-free was while in prison and while in custody for this case.
Sloan was sentenced to 72 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. The statutory range for the crime was 20 to 88 years.
