Man gets 30 years for fatal car crash in downtown Denver

Jaime Bautista-Sanchez was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday for a 2019 car crash that resulted in the death of a Denver man, the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced.

Bautista-Sanchez, 29, drove through a red light at Colfax Avenue and Osage Street on Jan. 19, 2019, striking the car of 28-year-old Ethan Small. Small died of his injuries.

Minutes prior to the crash, Bautista-Sanchez was driving at speeds of up to 101 mph. He was driving 90 mph when he hit Small.

At the time of the crash, Bautista-Sanchez had a blood alcohol content of 0.186 to 0.200, more than double the legal limit. He also had THC, Benzos and cocaine metabolite in his system.

Bautista-Sanchez plead guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree assault, vehicular homicide and driving under the influence – his second DUI.

“My hope is that this sentence brings Mr.Small’s family some peace in what has surely been a dark time for them,” said Denver District Attorney Beth McCann.

Bautista-Sanchez was sentenced to 30 years in the Department of Corrections for the murder charge, 30 years for the assault charge, 12 years for the vehicular homicide charge and one year for DUI.

The sentences will be served concurrently.
