Semi rollover shuts down portion of I-70

The Colorado State Patrol has closed a portion of I-70 at Beaver Creek Tunnel, which is 20 miles northeast of Grand Junction due to an accident.

Josh Lewis, a spokesperson for the Colorado State Patrol, said they received a call shortly after 1:30 p.m. about a semi that had rolled over.

“What we know so far is (the truck) hit the side of the tunnel and ended up catching on fire,” Lewis told The Denver Gazette.

The driver of the truck was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction and Lewis said he did not believe the injuries were life-threatening.

As of 4 p.m. traffic heading eastbound on I-70 at Beaver Creek Tunnel was still closed with no estimate time of when it’d be reopen.

Traffic westbound was shut down shortly after the accident occurred, but was reopened “fairly quickly,” Lewis said.
