Colorado man who plotted to blow up Pueblo synagogue pleads guilty

A Colorado man who plotted to blow up a synagogue in Pueblo faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to two charges in federal court Thursday.

Richard Holzer, 28, who self-identifies as a neo-Nazi and white supremacist, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to obstruct free exercise of religion and one count of attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building used in interstate commerce, according to the plea agreement.

Holzer was arrested on Nov. 1 after meeting with three undercover FBI agents who he conspired to blow up the Temple Emanuel Synagogue, according to court documents.

The agents provided him with two pipe bombs and 14 sticks of dynamite. Before being apprehended, he removed a copy of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” from his bag and said, “This is a move for our race,” according to the news release.

After being apprehended, Holzer confessed.

“This is the most important work that we can do — protecting our communities by stopping an attack before it occurred,” U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn said in a statement. “The people of Pueblo and the State of Colorado are safer as a result of today’s guilty plea.”

The investigation into Holzer began in September 2019, when undercover agents posed as a female who was supportive of white supremacy ideology on Facebook, according to the plea agreement.

Holzer shared with the agents that he was a former member of the Ku Klux Klan and at the time was a skinhead.

Over the next month, the agents learned that Holzer on Oct. 31, 2018, paid a cook in town $70 to put arsenic in the synagogue’s pipes, court documents show.

Holzer repeatedly sent pictures and videos of Nazi propaganda, knives and fire arms to the undercover agents, court documents show.

Holzer is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 20 in federal court and faces a maximum sentence of 20 years and a $250,000 fine, according to the release.
