Mesa County Sheriff’s Office locate climber who fell at least 30 feet

A Mesa County resident was rescued after falling at least 30 feet at Little Dominguez Canyon by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, officials said.

The climber, a man in his 30’s, was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital after rescue crews spotted two other climbers who were with the injured, about 90 minutes after receiving the initial report, said Megan Terlecky, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

“(We) believe he had an equipment failure (while repelling down a 200-foot cliff), which led to the 30 to 40 foot fall,” Terlecky said.

After the initial fall, the two other climbers that were with the injured contacted law enforcement through 9-1-1 text at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Delta County’s Communication Center received the message and contacted Mesa County.

Helicopter search and rescue teams spotted the two climbers in a remote location in the canyon area, but the team needed to hike around a mile to reach the climber.

The injured climber was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, Terlecky said.
