Man accused of shooting a family baby sitter charged with first-degree murder

A Larimer County man has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing a babysitter who was trying to prevent an auto theft.

Trevor George, 32, was officially charged with 19 criminal counts by the Weld County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday. Among the charges brought against George include: first-degree assault, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, first-degree robbery, aggravated robbery, two counts of first-degree aggravated motor theft and several other charges.

According to the criminal affidavit, Windsor police officers responded to a report of a shooting in a remote farmhouse in the 7900 block of Weld County Road 62, shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 30.

The caller had just returned to her friend’s home and found the family babysitter, Ryan Rogina, 30, dead in the driveway.

While speaking with the dispatcher the caller stated there was a man with a gun on the property and he had aimed the weapon at her and her three friends.

The victim told the dispatcher that she did not know the suspect, according to the affidavit.

The mother of the six-year-old child who Rogina was babysitting “immediately ran inside to check on her daughter,” the affidavit read.

After an alleged interaction with George, the victim found her daughter, crying and hiding underneath the bed. She realized her daughter’s eyes appeared to be “bulging out of her head,” according to the affidavit.

Authorities transported the child to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, where the SANE nurse told detectives that her injuries were consistent with being strangled.

The child confirmed she had been strangled, but did not know who did it, according to the affidavit.

Several hours later a stolen 2016 Dodge Challenger was reported 1.4 miles away from the scene of the slaying.

Detectives were able to locate George by pinpointing his location using his last known phone number.

Law enforcement spotted George inside the stolen Challenger at Schrader’s Gas Station at 601 Greenfield Court in Fort Collins, shortly before noon on Oct. 30.

While being taken into custody the defendant “(George) made a spontaneous utterance of knowing police were there because he killed a male earlier that morning,” the affidavit read.

During the investigation in the stolen vehicle, authorities found Rogina’s wallet and car keys, 0.4 grams of meth, two stolen handguns — one that matched the description of one in the crime —  and prescription drugs.

George was previously convicted of second-degree burglary in January 2007, and is currently being held in the Weld County Jail.
