Columbine Memorial donation box stolen

The donation box at the Columbine Memorial was stolen over the weekend, the Columbine Memorial Foundation announced Monday afternoon.

The foundation said someone dug up the box from the ground, removing it with its concrete base intact, sometime between Friday and Sunday.

The Columbine Memorial was dedicated and open to the public on Sept. 21, 2007 to honor the 12 students and one teacher killed in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

The memorial is maintained by the Columbine Memorial Foundation entirely through private donations collected, in part, by the stolen box.

A spokesman with the foundation said maintenance costs for the memorial can be between $12,000 to $15,000 annually, calling the theft “a big blow to the Memorial’s fundraising efforts.”

The memorial, located in unincorporated Jefferson County’s Clement Park, is intended to be “a place of peace, comfort and reflection remembering all those who were touched by the events of April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School,” the foundation said.

Officials said the theft would have taken a significant amount of time so they are hoping someone will come forward who witnessed the crime.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 303-271-0211.

Donations for the Columbine Memorial Foundation will now be accepted online at columbinememorial.org.
