Centennial gas station clerk fatally shot during robbery identified
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office identified the gas station clerk who was shot and later died at a gas station in Centennial on Thursday evening.
Mauricio O. Perez, 24, was shot in the abdomen and died during surgery.
Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 8200 block of South Quebec Street on Thursday evening, after several customers walked into the store and found the clerk lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.
Upon the initial investigation, law enforcement officials discovered surveillance footage of a man walking into the convenience store and asking the clerk for a carton of cigarettes.
After speaking for a brief time, the man began pointing a handgun at the clerk and demanded the cigarettes and money from the cash register.
The victim complied and was seen putting the items in a bag.
While the suspect was taking the bag from the store clerk, he was seen shooting the victim in the abdomen and fled.
Authorities say the man was described as wearing gray sweatshirt, a black and white plaid shirt or jacket, gray pants, brown shoes and was wearing eyeglasses.
Ginger Delgado, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office, said Tuesday that investigators are following up on several leads into the shooting, but did not have any new information to release at this time.
She added investigators are also investigating whether a robbery that occurred around the same time of the shooting are connected.
