Report: Colorado is top 10 most generous state on GoFundMe

Saving Money is Important

Colorado is the ninth-most generous state in the country based on the number of GoFundMe donations per capita, GoFundMe found in its annual giving report released Tuesday.

Above Colorado, the top eight states in order are Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Connecticut, California and Rhode Island.

This news comes on Colorado Gives Day, one of the largest giving movements in the country where Coloradans are encouraged to donate to local nonprofits. Every nonprofit that receives a donation Tuesday will be given part of a $1 million incentive fund.

In Colorado, the most popular fundraising categories are animals and community, according to the report.

The most successful GoFundMe campaign in Colorado this year was First Responders Who Lost Their Home, raising more than $358,000 for eight first responders whose homes were destroyed by the East Troublesome wildfire.

Other top campaigns included Cure Kinley & Kennedy, Cure GM1 raising $271,000, Funeral Cost and Family Expenses for a murdered Muslim family raising $215,000, Protesters Against Police Brutality raising $75,000 and Feeding Colorado Heroes raising $68,000.

All of the campaigns are still accepting donations.

Nationally, the most popular fundraising campaign this year was America’s Food Fund, which raised $44 million to feed those experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also in the top five most popular campaigns are the George Floyd Memorial with $14.7 million, Frontline Responders with $8.2 million, Justice for Breonna Taylor with $6.7 million and Navajo & Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief with $6.5 million.

Internationally, the United States is the second-most generous country, bested only by Ireland.

“It’s important to remember that we’re our best when we come together,” the report said. “As we look toward 2021 and enter the next decade of giving, we can build a more caring world and inspire hope for a better tomorrow.”

In the 10 years since GoFundMe was launched, 150 million donations have been made to individuals, causes and organizations globally.
