Denver’s monthly marijuana sales down again after hitting all-time high

Congress Recreational Marijuana Use

Medical and retail marijuana sales continue to fall monthly after hitting an all-time peak in July, the Colorado Department of Revenue’s October report reveals.

Total sales for the year have passed $1.8 billion — breaking last year’s record total of $1.75 million with two months yet to be recorded.

Colorado’s marijuana sales reached a record $226,374,568 in July, breaking $200 million for the first time ever. Sales then dipped in August, a month that is often the year’s top performer, decreasing to $218,601,341.

Sales took a hit again in September, reaching $206,488,268, and finally $199,788,864 in October.

July had marked the third month in a row that Colorado broke its marijuana sales record, reporting over $198 million of sales in June and $192 million in May.

Of October’s $199,788,864 total, a whopping $160,999,919 came from retail alone. And of retail sales, over $47 million came from Denver County, followed by Arapahoe County with $16 million and Adams County with $13 million.

Sales tax from retail marijuana dropped by over $3 million from August to November.

Though it may be tempting to blame the sales decrease on the COVID-19 pandemic’s adverse effect on employment and the economy, the state’s marijuana industry saw a similar dip last year.

Between August and November 2019, marijuana sales plummeted by over $32 million before hitting a slight uptick in December. Four straight months of decline can also be seen between August and November of 2018, 2017, 2015 and 2014.

This year, the only difference appears to be that July served as the annual peak in sales rather than the usual August peak.

Following the trends of previous years, sales can be expected to increase again in December.
