Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are asking for the public’s help in solving a recent poaching incident in Salida.
Officials from CPW responded to a report of a doe mule deer that had been shot in the chest with a crossbow just north of U.S. Highway 50 and just southwest of downtown Salida on the morning of Dec. 3.
After assessing the deer, CPW officers determined it could not recover from its injuries and humanely euthanized it, according to a media release.
“This is poaching and it’s illegal and we want to catch the person who did this,” said Tyler Kersey, a CPW district wildlife manager for the Salida region.
“This deer was treated unethically and that is something we take very seriously.”
Anyone found responsible for illegally injuring or killing wildlife in Colorado could face misdemeanor charges that carry a penalty of fines ranging from $750 to $3,000 and up to six months in jail, depending on the charge.
