Perhaps one of the most underrated pieces of gear, the base layer is a crucial inclusion of any high-elevation set-up. When it comes to a base layer, it’s important to find something that’s lightweight and compact while also bringing plenty of warmth to the table. The Helly Hansen LIFA merino lightweight hoodie does just that.

One aspect of this base layer that makes it unique is that it’s made with Merino wool, as well as materials used in the patented LIFA Stay Warm Technology – 70 percent of the material is 100 percent Merino wool and 30 percent is polypropylene. This allows the wearer to get the benefits of each material, as this mix seems to maximize the effectiveness of this product.

At a price point of $110, this is an expensive hoodie, but it’s well worth the cost. It’s durable and warm, while also thin enough to fit well under other layers without bunching up. It’s also super comfortable.

Another aspect worth noting is that this base layer doesn’t have the clunky or artificial feel often encountered in other materials aiming to accomplish both the goal of being lightweight while also warm. In other words, it’s extremely soft to the touch.

Thus far, I’ve summited multiple snowy fourteeners in this piece of gear and have taken it out on countless hikes with no complaints. I’m also a big fan of the hood, which allows for some cold weather protection when an outer layer may be removed.
