Fort Collins asking for public input on future plastic reduction ordinance

The Fort Collins City Council is asking for community input for developing a plastic reduction ordinance before putting it on the ballot in April.
This will assist the council finalize the details of the planned ordinance, which could include a ban on plastic grocery bags and plastic straws.
“Plastic pollution is often perceived to be an issue isolated to coastal areas, however also impacts inland environments, including Fort Collins,” officials said in a media release.
On Tuesday, City Council voted 5-2 to have city staff draft an ordinance regarding the plastic issue, which could lead to a ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery stores.
Plastic bags, straws, take-out containers, plastic utensils are some of the many items categorized as single-use plastics.
City officials are encouraging the public to join in the conversation in an upcoming work session on Jan. 12, followed by tentative conversations on Feb 2. and Feb. 16, according to the media release.
