CDOT creates new interactive map to help Coloradans find tire shops
Snowy and icy winter roads make Colorado’s roadways a dangerous place for drivers with nearly bare or bare tires.
In an attempt to make finding new tires easier, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) launched an interactive map that will help people find tire shops and local discounts.
“When it comes to winter driving, tires are one of the primary factors in how well you’re able to navigate Colorado’s often treacherous road conditions,” said Andrew Hogle, CDOT’s public information officer. “By creating this simple tool, we hope Coloradans access the resources they need to stay safe on the roads this winter.”
From October to December 2019, 127 crashes were reported on the Interstate 70 mountain corridor that resulted in 114 hours of partial and full-lane closures, officials said.
Additionally more than 50 non-crash emergency responses such as spinouts, were also reported.
CDOT has partnered with over 140 tire shops across the state and officials say many of the retailers will provide discounts on tires and winter maintenance services through the interactive database.
Additionally officials want to remind drivers that an updated traction law went into effect in 2020, which requires all motorists in the mountains to have either winter tires, mud or snow tires or all-weather tires.
Currently it is illegal for tires to have less than 3/16 of an inch on the tires.
“CDOT and our partners do everything possible to keep the roads clear and safe for those traveling, but it is the responsibility of all drivers to make sure their vehicles are prepared for winter,” said Hogle. “One of the biggest, yet most preventable, things we see that causes major problems on our roads and highways is bad tires.”
