Denver’s Latino Cultural Arts Center to hold virtual conversation on art, immigration

The Latino Cultural Arts Center of Colorado is holding a virtual event next week in which panelists will discuss society’s collective responsibilities regarding art and immigration.

The event, titled “Response(Art)ability and Leadership in Continued Times of Injustice,” is in partnership with the Biennial of the Americas, the Denver Art Museum, Emerson Collective, History Colorado and the Village Exchange Center.

“My goal with these incisive conversations is to transform institutions from the bottom-up at a time when people are losing hope,” said Alfredo Reyes, Latino Cultural Arts Center director.

The event is a continuation of Alejandro Iñárritu’s Academy Award-winning virtual reality exhibition CARNE y ARENA, on display at the Stanley Marketplace in Aurora.

CARNE y ARENA is a 20-minute virtual reality sequence, reenacting real experiences of people immigrating to the U.S. from Central America and Mexico.

Reyes said the event is well-timed regarding the presidential inauguration and continued strife over immigration in the U.S.

“At the Latino Cultural Arts Center, we are committed to leading in a way that brings different perspectives together and reignites our shared belief that we are all worthy of freedom and justice,” Reyes said.

Various panelists will speak on their experiences with immigration and artist Molina Speaks will bookend the event with poems and his “live-scribe” technique, incorporating audience response and comments.

All are welcome and educational, government, artistic and cultural institutions are specifically asked to attend to begin the societal dialogue.

The free event will be live-streamed at LCAC-Denver.org on Jan. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. Participants are encouraged to register ahead of time at bit.ly/ResponseArtability.
