Hiker missing in Colorado as winter conditions complicate search effort
On Wednesday night, the Boulder County Communications Center was notified of a missing hiker. This prompted the start of an ongoing search and rescue mission.
The hiker, a male 27-year-old, left to hike from Arvada at approximately 9:30 AM on Wednesday morning, though he never returned. This resulted in an overdue hiker report. His vehicle was later located at Hessie Trailhead near Nederland and his cell phone sent a ping from a trail along the Continental Divide around noon.
Search and rescue teams deployed ready for a snow mission, utilizing skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers, though the missing hiker has yet to be found. Five teams were active and working throughout the night, though weather made their mission difficult. High winds, frigid temperatures, and snow have been present in the area.
The search continues into Thursday morning.
Thanks goes out to the teams involved in this effort, including the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
Hessie Trailhead is a popular hiking destination on Colorado’s Front Range near Eldora and Nederland. Many use this trailhead to access the Indian Peaks Wilderness, Devils Thumb, Lost Lake, King Lake, Woodland Lake, and Diamond Lake trails.
