Two people, including the shooter, are dead after a man attacked two Oak Creek homes Wednesday night, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies said 46-year-old Steven Padilla Jr. drove to 218 E. Highland St. about 3:30 p.m. and fired shots at the home, hitting one male victim before driving off. The victim suffered minor injuries, deputies said.
After fleeing the scene, Padilla drove to the Willow Hill mobile home park less than a mile away at 201 Wild Hogg Drive. About 3:40 p.m., he fired several shots outside of the trailer unit 37.
Padilla then entered the trailer and tried to shoot a man inside, but his handgun malfunctioned and didn’t fire. As Padilla tried to fix the gun, the man tackled him.
Padilla fired several more shots during the struggle, hitting a different man and a woman who were also in the trailer. A third man in the trailer then retrieved a gun and shot Padilla, killing him, deputies said.
The man shot in the trailer died from his injuries. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, deputies said.
Padilla’s motives in both shootings are unclear, as are his relationships with the victims.
The Oak Creek Police Department and Routt County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
